She started skating at the age of five and won the overall championship at the 2009 All-Japan Junior Speed Skating Championships.

In 2009, he was selected as the youngest Japanese speed skater ever to represent Japan at the Olympics (Vancouver Olympics) in the 1000m, 1500m and Team Pursuit.

He won all four events at the 2016 All-Japan Championships, becoming the seventh person in 14 years to win the championship outright.

He won three medals at the PyeongChang Olympics in 2018.

For the first time, a Japanese woman won all gold, silver, and bronze medals at the same Olympic Games in both the summer and winter.

At the World Cup, she became the first Japanese woman to win the overall team pursuit title in three consecutive seasons, the first Japanese woman to win the overall 1500m title, and the first Japanese woman to win the overall title in all events.

He was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in the Spring 2018 Medal of Honor.

At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, he will compete in five events (four individual and one team) and seven races in total, including the quarterfinals and semifinals of the team pursuit. 

Her performance at the Beijing Olympics (four medals won in one Winter Olympics) was the most ever by a Japanese athlete. Combined with her performance at the Pyeongchang Olympics, she won seven medals, the most by a Japanese female athlete at any Olympics, both summer and winter.

In April 2022, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon, decoration version.
